Mendoza wine questions
Why is Mendoza good for wine?
Mendoza's vineyards sit at about 2,000 to 5,000 feet at the foot of the Andes, in a high desert. Intense sun ripens the grapes fully, while cold nights keep acidity fresh. There's very little rain, so diseases are rare, and vines are irrigated with snowmelt from the mountains. It produces about 70% of Argentina's wine.
What are Mendoza's main sub-regions?
Luján de Cuyo, just south of Mendoza city, is known for old-vine malbec and was Argentina's first appellation. Maipú is nearby and historic. The Uco Valley, to the southwest, is the highest and coolest, with areas like Tupungato, Tunuyán, San Carlos, Gualtallary and Paraje Altamira, producing some of Argentina's most acclaimed wines.
What is the best wine from Mendoza?
Malbec is Mendoza's most famous wine, especially from the high-altitude Uco Valley, where it's fresher and more floral. Cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc are also excellent, and cabernet franc has gained a lot of attention recently. For whites, Mendoza chardonnay from high vineyards can be crisp and elegant.
