Burgundy questions

What is red Burgundy?

Red Burgundy is pinot noir from the Burgundy region in eastern France, mainly the Côte d'Or (Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune) and the Côte Chalonnaise. It's known for elegant wines with red cherry, raspberry, earth, mushroom and spice. Beaujolais, in the south of the greater region, is made from gamay instead.

Is Burgundy the same as cabernet sauvignon?

No. Red Burgundy is made from pinot noir, and cabernet sauvignon isn't grown there. In the US, burgundy was once used loosely to describe any cheap red jug wine, which caused confusion. Cabernet sauvignon is the main grape of Bordeaux, the other famous French red region, and is much fuller and more tannic than Burgundy.

How much does a bottle of Burgundy cost?

Prices vary widely. Regional Bourgogne Rouge or Blanc usually starts around $25 to $35. Village wines, like Gevrey-Chambertin, Volnay or Meursault, typically run $40 to $100. Premier cru wines often cost $80 to $250, and grand cru Burgundy goes from a few hundred dollars into the thousands for the most famous names.

What are the quality levels in Burgundy?

Burgundy has four main levels. Regional wines are labeled Bourgogne. Village wines carry a village name like Pommard or Chablis. Premier cru (1er cru) wines come from specific vineyards with excellent sites, and grand cru wines come from the 33 top vineyards, like Romanée-Conti or Montrachet, about 1% of production.
