Oregon wine questions
Is Oregon known for wine?
Yes. Oregon is best known for pinot noir from the Willamette Valley, where a cool climate similar to Burgundy produces elegant, balanced wines. The modern industry started in the 1960s, and several Burgundy producers have since invested there. Oregon is also known for chardonnay and pinot gris.
What is the Willamette Valley?
The Willamette Valley runs south from Portland and is where most Oregon wine is made. It's protected by the Coast Range to the west, with mild summers and cool nights. It has several sub-regions, including the Dundee Hills, Eola-Amity Hills, Chehalem Mountains, Yamhill-Carlton and Ribbon Ridge, each with its own soils.
What other grapes does Oregon grow?
Besides pinot noir, the Willamette Valley grows excellent chardonnay, pinot gris, riesling and pinot blanc, plus some gamay. Southern Oregon, including the Rogue and Umpqua Valleys, is warmer and grows syrah, tempranillo, cabernet sauvignon and grenache. Eastern Oregon shares some regions with Washington, like the Walla Walla Valley.
