Gin questions
What is gin made of?
Gin is a neutral spirit, usually distilled from grain, that's flavored with juniper berries and other botanicals. Juniper has to be the main flavor by law. Common supporting botanicals include coriander seed, angelica root, orris root, citrus peel, cassia and licorice. Modern gins often add local ingredients, like cucumber, rose, herbs or tea.
What does London dry gin mean?
London dry is a production style, not a place, so it can be made anywhere. All the flavor has to come from natural botanicals added during distillation, and nothing can be added after except water and a tiny amount of sugar. The result is a dry, juniper-forward gin. Plymouth gin and New Western or contemporary gins are other styles.
What gin is similar to Hendrick's?
Hendrick's is a softer, floral gin known for cucumber and rose. If you like that, look for contemporary gins that lean floral or fresh rather than heavy juniper. Gins made with cucumber, rose, chamomile or other delicate botanicals tend to be similar. Tell us what you like about Hendrick's in the shop and we'll pick a bottle from our shelf.
How long does gin last after opening?
Gin doesn't spoil because of its high alcohol content, so an opened bottle stays safe indefinitely. The botanical aromas, especially citrus and floral notes, slowly fade, so most gins taste best within a year or two of opening. Keep the cap tight and store it away from sunlight and heat.
