Red wine questions

What are the main types of red wine?

From lightest to boldest, light reds include pinot noir, gamay and frappato. Medium-bodied reds include grenache, merlot, sangiovese and tempranillo. Full-bodied reds include syrah, malbec, zinfandel, cabernet sauvignon and nebbiolo. Body depends on the grape and where it's grown, so a California pinot can be fuller than a cool-climate syrah.

How long can I keep red wine?

Most red wine is made to drink within two to five years of the vintage. Wines with high tannin and acidity, like top Bordeaux, Barolo, Brunello and Burgundy, can improve for 10 to 30 years or more. Store bottles on their side somewhere cool, dark and steady, ideally around 55°F, away from heat and vibration.

What temperature should red wine be served at?

Serve most red wines at 60 to 65°F, a little cooler than room temperature. Warmer than that, the alcohol stands out and the wine tastes flabby. Light reds like pinot noir and gamay are nice around 55°F. If a bottle has been sitting in a warm room, 15 minutes in the fridge before serving helps.

How does special order work?

Stella's Cellar bottles are ordered from our distributors after you buy them. You pay online as usual, and the bottle is ready for pickup at our Greenpoint shop or local delivery in about 2 to 3 days. We'll let you know when it arrives. This lets us offer a much bigger range than fits on our shelves.
