Red wine questions

What's a good red wine for beginners?

Start with something light and soft, like pinot noir, gamay from Beaujolais, or a grenache-based wine. They have bright fruit and low tannin, so they don't feel harsh or drying. Merlot and malbec are good next steps if you want more body. Big, tannic reds like cabernet sauvignon and nebbiolo are easier to enjoy once you're used to red wine.

Should red wine be chilled?

Slightly, yes. Room temperature advice comes from cold European cellars, and most reds taste best around 60 to 65°F. A modern apartment is warmer, which makes the alcohol stand out. Put a bottle in the fridge for about 15 minutes before opening. Light reds like gamay, frappato and some pinot noirs are good even colder, around 55°F.

How long does red wine last after opening?

Most reds last three to five days after opening if you put the cork back in and keep the bottle in the fridge, which slows oxidation. Let it warm up for a few minutes before you pour. Fuller, more tannic reds tend to last longer than light ones. Once it smells flat or vinegary, use it for cooking.

What's the difference between dry and sweet red wine?

Dry red wine has almost no sugar left after fermentation, usually under 4 grams per liter. Sweet reds keep some grape sugar, either by stopping fermentation early, as with port, or by using very ripe or dried grapes. Most reds you'll find, including nearly all of ours, are dry. A few, like some Lambrusco and dessert reds, are made off dry or sweet.
