Wine under $25 questions

Is a $20 bottle of wine considered cheap?

No. The $15 to $25 range is where many small, independent producers sell their everyday wine, and quality improves a lot compared with bottles under $10. You're paying for real grapes, careful farming and less industrial winemaking. Many excellent wines from lesser-known regions sit in this range.

Where do you find good wine for the price?

Regions that are less famous or have lower costs often give the most for your money. Look at Portugal (Douro, Alentejo, vinho verde), Spain (garnacha, Rueda, Bierzo), southern Italy and Sicily, France's Languedoc, Loire and Côtes du Rhône, Chile, Argentina, Austria and Greece. Ask us for current favorites in the shop.

What's a smooth red under $25?

For a smooth, easy red, try Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, Spanish garnacha, Côtes du Rhône, a merlot from Chile or a malbec from Argentina. These are soft and fruity, with gentle tannin. If you like lighter wine, Beaujolais or a light pinot noir also works. Avoid young, tannic cabernet if you want smooth.
