American spirits questions
What spirits are distinctly American?
Bourbon is the classic American spirit, recognized by Congress in 1964 as a distinctive product of the United States. Tennessee whiskey and American rye whiskey are also distinctly American. American single malt whiskey was officially defined as its own category by federal regulators in January 2025. Applejack is one of the oldest American spirits.
What is a craft distillery?
A craft distillery is a small, independent producer, usually making spirits in small batches with more hands-on methods. The American Craft Spirits Association defines it by annual volume and independent ownership. Craft distillers often use local grains and botanicals, and many New York farm distilleries fall into this category.
Does bourbon have to come from Kentucky?
No. Bourbon can be made anywhere in the United States, as long as it follows the federal rules for grain, barrels and proof. Kentucky produces about 95% of it because of its limestone water, climate and long history, but distilleries in New York, Texas, Indiana and many other states make excellent bourbon too.
