Spanish wine questions
What are the most popular Spanish wines?
Rioja and Ribera del Duero are Spain's most famous reds, both based on tempranillo. Albariño from Rías Baixas in Galicia is the best-known white. Cava is Spain's traditional-method sparkling wine, and sherry is its classic fortified wine. Priorat, Rueda, Bierzo and Toro are other well-known regions.
What does crianza mean?
Crianza is an aging category on Spanish wine labels. In Rioja, a crianza red must age at least two years, with at least one year in oak barrels. Other regions have similar minimums. Crianza wines are fresher and fruitier than reserva and gran reserva, which age longer. Joven means young, with little or no aging.
What is Priorat?
Priorat is a small, rugged wine region in Catalonia, southwest of Barcelona. Its vineyards grow on steep slopes of llicorella, a dark slate soil that forces vines to dig deep. It makes concentrated, powerful reds from garnacha and cariñena, often blended with cabernet or syrah. It's one of only two regions with Spain's top DOQ/DOCa status, along with Rioja.
