Reserva questions

What grapes are used in Rioja Reserva?

Tempranillo is usually the leading grape in Rioja Reserva. Garnacha may add ripe fruit and body, while Graciano and Mazuelo can contribute color, acidity, and structure. Each producer chooses its own blend, so the proportions vary. Extended maturation can make the components feel integrated without changing the grapes permitted in Rioja.

Can Rioja Reserva age in the bottle?

Many Rioja Reserva wines can develop well after purchase, particularly bottles with balanced acidity, concentration, and sound storage. More modest examples are intended for earlier drinking, while stronger vintages may improve for years. Keep the bottle cool, dark, and still. Once opened, mature aromas can fade quickly, so taste rather than rely only on age.

Should Rioja Reserva be decanted?

A young Rioja Reserva may benefit from 30 to 60 minutes in a decanter, especially if the aromas seem restrained or the tannins feel firm. Older bottles should be handled gently because long air exposure can fade their fragrance. Stand a mature bottle upright, pour slowly to avoid sediment, then taste it soon after opening.

What food pairs with Rioja Reserva?

Rioja Reserva is excellent with roast lamb, pork shoulder, grilled steak, duck, mushrooms, and aged Manchego. Its evolved savory notes make it especially satisfying with roasted dishes and cured meats. Serve it slightly cool, around 55 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Decant a young bottle briefly if it seems closed when first opened.
