Napa Valley questions
What wine is Napa Valley known for?
Napa Valley is best known for cabernet sauvignon, which produces ripe, powerful, structured reds that can age for decades. Warm days and cool nights from the San Pablo Bay give rich fruit with balance. Napa also makes excellent chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, merlot and zinfandel, and the cooler Carneros area is known for pinot noir and sparkling wine.
Are Napa Valley wines good?
Napa makes some of the most collected and acclaimed wines in the US, especially cabernet sauvignon. The 1976 Judgment of Paris, where Napa wines beat top French wines in a blind tasting, put the region on the map. Prices can be high, so it pays to look at smaller producers, second labels and less famous sub-regions.
What are Napa's sub-regions?
Napa Valley has 16 sub-appellations, or AVAs, each with its own soils and climate. Valley floor areas include Oakville, Rutherford, Stags Leap District, St. Helena, Yountville and Calistoga. Mountain areas include Howell Mountain, Spring Mountain, Mount Veeder and Diamond Mountain. Los Carneros in the south is cooler.
