Añejo questions

What is añejo tequila?

Añejo tequila is blue Weber agave tequila aged in oak containers for at least one year and less than three years. The aging gives it a deeper golden to amber color and more barrel influence than blanco or reposado. Typical flavors can include cooked agave, vanilla, caramel, spice, toasted oak, nuts, and dried fruit.

What does añejo tequila taste like?

Expect roasted agave with oak-driven vanilla, caramel, baking spice, cocoa, nuts, and dried fruit. Longer time in wood tends to produce a richer aroma and smoother impression, but it can also make oak more dominant. Different barrels and distillery methods mean flavor varies considerably from one añejo to another.

How should añejo tequila be served?

Drink añejo neat at room temperature or with one large ice cube if you prefer a slower, cooler pour. A small tulip-shaped glass helps concentrate the aroma. Sip rather than shoot it, allowing the glass to rest briefly between tastes. Avoid freezing it, since very cold temperatures suppress the nuanced barrel and agave flavors.

Can añejo tequila be used in cocktails?

It can make spirit-forward cocktails with more oak and richness than blanco. Añejo works especially well in an Old Fashioned, Manhattan variation, or a stirred drink with bitters and a modest sweetener. In a margarita, its barrel notes can be interesting, though lime and orange flavors may cover subtler details. Use recipes with restrained mixers.
